The Company

Mindfully Wired is a unique, creative consultancy: we use communication in all its forms to deliver award-winning work in the environment sector, with a specialist focus on the marine environment. Our portfolio sees us working with national governments, business, academia and local communities. We have consulted on everything from UN treaties, to branding campaigns, to high-tech product development. We build websites, write amazing copy, convene events, deliver stunning design, shape policy and much more – always providing consistent, high-quality and powerfully human support to our brilliant clients. We are an extension of their teams, and we are driven by work that is meaningful; shining a spotlight on initiatives that seek to bring about positive change for people and planet

The Team

The MWC team has grown from one to twenty in the past seven years. This journey has seen us build-out an amazingly varied team; we are strengthened in our delivery by diverse skill-sets and interests. MWC has three core delivery teams: Creative & Marketing, Events, and Science & Policy.

Our original team, Creative & Marketing, is the creative engine-house of our endeavours. Combining subject knowledge and commercial know-how with visual flair, exacting standards, and hugely imaginative campaign work, this team is now seeking a new ‘Head Of’ to champion our Creative mission.

What is that mission? Bringing high-quality, creatively insightful, and professional communications that stand-out in the environment and marine sector, and drive positive action.

The Role

The Head of Creative role sits alongside a Head of Science & Policy, Head of Ops & Events and Head of Finance within the company at this time.

The core responsibilities for the Head of Creative role cover four main areas: senior-level project delivery, business development, overall team management and strategic oversight and internal reporting for the Creative & Marketing Team within MWC.

The Head of Creative (HoC) will have oversight of all work undertaken by the Creative and Marketing Team, which will include developing creative guidelines and direction for all creative work such as advocacy campaigns, website, print, email campaigns, infographics and more.

Whilst maintaining creative oversight of the team, the HoC will also develop and maintain a bespoke set of projects, including those that are guided by individual professional strengths, preferences and ambitions over time.

Core responsibilities of the role include:

  • The strategic management of the running of the Creative and Marketing Team, this requires the ability to combine elements of operational and strategic work. We need someone who is happy to develop a campaign strategy on one day, while scrutinising a budget the next.
  • The strategic responsibility for maintaining and/or growing the Creative & Marketing Team – including shaping the roles within the team to meet strategic goals. This will also include hiring and staffing within the team.
  • Developing future work pipelines through client engagement, spotting new opportunities, growth into new sectors, and collaborations with new partners/agencies.
  • Directing the creative response to briefs for the Creative & Marketing team to deliver projects against your creative vision.
  • Supporting the Creative & Marketing Team, helping them deliver their best work. Knowing when to step in, and when to step back.
  • Evaluate projects to ensure they meet the expectations, properly represent the brief and achieve the desired results to present back to clients.
  • Represent the business at a senior level, including through pitches for work. Manage and nurture new and existing clients to build long-term relationships.
  • Creating and maintaining a vision for the company’s external comms and branding and ensuring those creative standards are upheld.

Business development

All three teams (Creative, Events, and SciPol) in MWC conduct business development to ensure a constant throughflow of work well into the future. This is supported by the Director and the Head of Operations – the latter with a particular focus on business-wide project planning and capacity monitoring.

Business development duties associated with the HoCM role may include:

  • Proactive and long-term horizon-scanning for opportunities of relevance to the Creative team – eg. identifying relevant ‘calls’ / ITTs, as well as identifying projects and areas within the landscape that MWC works that may require comms support.
  • Supporting the Creative Manager in drafting and submitting responses to client requests for quotes – considering their overall professional development in this area, and ensuring that quoted costs are in-line with actual delivery and the company’s needs.
  • When relevant, supporting the Creative Manager in making a ‘yes or no’ decision as to whether to go ahead with a bid for a project.

Strategic oversight and internal reporting

The HoC will be required to report on behalf of the Creative & Marketing team at the Senior Leadership level (currently comprised of all ‘Head Of’ roles, plus the company’s Director). This requires an overall view of the ‘health’ of the team, its priority projects, pressures, budgets and future work slate.

Reporting templates and structures will be provided to facilitate this, alongside relevant training on internal systems.

The HoC will be engaged in recruitment for the Creative & Marketing team, attending interviews for staff (of at least Officer level) alongside the Creative Manager. When there appears to be a case for a new hire within the team, the HoC will have responsibility for highlighting this and making a relevant business case, through consultation and discussion with the Director.

Further detail/responsibilities

In addition to the above responsibilities, the following duties are also foreseen:

  • Line-manage, support and ensure both the well-being and development of the Creative Manager.
  • Represent MWC at external meetings, conferences and in engagement with clients when relevant.
  • Provide peer-support or insight relevant to projects in other teams – including, creative direction for SciPol projects when required.

Benefits

MWC is an exceptionally busy, dynamic and purpose-driven business – with an engaged, mutually-supportive team with a wide range of interests, experience, academic backgrounds and subject specialisms. A real benefit to any role at MWC is being part of a team of like-minded, driven and socially-conscious colleagues who work cross-team to deliver award-winning work in the environmental sector. Further benefits to this role include:

  • Option for remote working, and flexible hours in line with existing company policies.
  • Option to work in MWC’s exciting office environment, in Paintworks in Bristol.
  • Work laptop and home-working set-up (as required).
  • The opportunity to play an integral role in a small, multi-award-winning business that has grown from a single staff member to 20+ employees (plus 3-4 contractors) across a seven-year period.
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Yearly CPD budget

Person specification

MWC’s business ‘ecosystem’ is in fine balance – everyone on the team contributes something unique, with the common factor of being kind, driven, enthusiastic and curious. While daily duties may vary for this role, the ability to inspire and lead are key. The right fit for this role will be someone who can recognise, nurture and protect people’s good ideas. They will be an organised, creative, professional and personable individual who can speak to anyone, process information quickly, hit the ground running and have fun doing it.
