Connecting Parliamentarians to people throughout the fisheries sector

All Party Parliamentary Groups, or ‘APPGs’ for slightly less of a mouthful, are designed to bring together MPs and Peers from across the political spectrum to collaborate on issues they care about. When MWC took on the role of Secretariat for the APPG on Fisheries with Fishmonger’s Hall as a funder, we wanted to ensure a variety of stakeholders could get involved, whilst ensuring the agenda was transparent and not guided by lobby groups or any other one-sided campaign.

With this in mind, we created a series of free inclusive events in Westminster and invited the fisheries community to attend and contribute. Each event covers a particular topic of interest and is led by one of our enthusiastic co-chairs, Sheryll Murray MP or Melanie Onn MP, whilst a panel of carefully chosen speakers present and spark discussions. There are several more events this year – do get in touch if you’re interested in attending. We’ll be running events across 2020, too, so we’re also always open to hearing ideas for topics, receiving research, opinions, updates from the coast…we’re essentially a parliamentary listening post for all things fish!

The APPG has nine Parliamentary members and MWC is regularly meeting with them about their concerns and ideas, as well as introducing a few of our own thoughts and processes to further cross-party collaboration. The APPG has a strong online presence; @FisheriesAPPG shares daily fishy news and policy updates and also live-tweets our meetings, whilst a fortnightly newsletter sheds light on anything fisheries-related that goes on in Parliament.
