About us
Mindfully Wired is a values-based communications consultancy with a speciality in the marine environment. We mix science with creativity to better communicate stories of sustainability; using facts and imagery to inspire imagination. We’ve run a dedicated internship programme for a number of years and are now expanding to incorporate a new type of opportunity within our team – a Returnship – this is a special role, specifically for mums returning to work after having children.
About Returnships
We offer unique opportunities to women of any age or career stage who are keen to get back into work after taking a break or some time off. This could be after having children, or a bereavement, or other personal reasons. We’re looking for someone who wants to sharpen their comms skills, to take their future career in a different direction, or to simply build confidence in the workplace. A Returnship is a short, four-week, opportunity to do just that – by immersing yourself in a mindful, busy, sociable and fisheries-focused communications organisation.

The role
This exciting opportunity to work with a creative and dynamic team in a fast-paced office environment requires a candidate with excellent organisational skills and enthusiasm for working closely with a small team. We appreciate applicants may have significant professional experience to bring to the table, so we’ll be developing a 4-week programme of work that is varied and will include challenges, although we’ll be conscious to develop this alongside the individual through discussion with the Director.
Each week you will focus on different parts of the business, working with both the Science & Policy Team and the Creative & Marketing Team to deliver on diverse projects. We want to ensure that you dive into areas of communication that are particularly important to you. This means your work will be varied and interesting, and will give you a good flavour for what it’s like to work in marine comms. Activities are likely to include:
- Writing engaging copy (including blog posts, newsletters and website materials);
- Creating targeted social media content (focusing on a range of marine-based topics with an emphasis on fisheries and seafood);
- Digesting technical briefings and making scientific information accessible to a wider audience, including policy;
- Graphic design and video editing.
This opportunity would suit someone with a keen interest in sustainability issues and who enjoys finding creative and powerful ways to tell stories to diverse audiences.
What would make you a good fit for this opportunity?
- A passion for the environment, and an interest in the sea
- A degree-level qualification or several years of professional experience
- Eagerness to try new things and learn from others
- Strong copywriting and communication skills
- A keen visual eye
- Friendly, flexible and motivated!
Desirables
- An understanding of best practices in digital communication
- Experience with database research
- Experience of creative or formal writing
- Effective use of social media (Twitter, Facebook) at either personal or commercial level
Returnship arrangements
We would like the new member of our team to agree to set days each week (ideally Monday-Thursday), with at least one day spent at our offices in Bristol. If needed, we can make a laptop available to the successful candidate for the duration of their time working for MWC.
We are interested in hearing from any interested parties and we’ll be keeping all names on file, even though we can only offer one of these opportunities at a time. There won’t be formal interviews, but we would like to meet and chat informally with candidates we think could be a good fit.
Does this sound like you? If so, please send a CV and cover letter to hello@mindfullywired.org to apply. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis for this ongoing opportunity. Feel free to drop us a line with any questions!
